Why do we share our confidential information on Social Media? When FACEBOOK Founder Mark Zuckerberg avoids doing it, in public.

Whole world is knowing about the congressional testimony, where Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg appeared before a US Senate joint committee hearing, in front of a committee of the House of Representatives, in Washington to answer on consumer privacy. This was due to a massive scandal involving Trump-linked firm Cambridge Analytica that nefariously obtained access to 50 million Facebook users' profile information. Lawmakers accused him of failing to protect the personal information of millions of Americans from Russians intent on upsetting the US election.

Internet has became a part of our life. It has given the birth, to social media. Most of us have our accounts on Facebook,  Twitter, Instagram and etc. Many of us are also addicted of posting, on the social media sites and checking of its respond & reaction by our friends, family and relatives. Posts, Likes, Sharing, Subscriptions are some common words to hear in our modern society.

When we choose any social media site to become member, they ask us to fill our personal details in their forms such as, Gender, Marital Status, Date of Birth, Phone no, Email Id, Bank Account No, Credit Card - Debit Card info and etc. And we happily provide these to the channels for obtaining their free services, without thinking of it’s possible negative & dangerous impact.

More than that, we share our private information on timelines, through our posts & uploads. We tell social media and allow others to breach our privacy.
Not only, we share information related to ourselves, but also about others and provide a link to contact them and know more about them.
The social media easily answers the questions:- Who are our friends, relative & colleagues? To whom we like doing parties?
Which are our favourite hangout places?
Where do we travel and spend much of our time?
What kind of opinion we keep politically, socially and on certain issues?
Who is our girlfriend, boyfriend, wife, husband, brother, sister & etc? More over, to whom we broke-up and going to be in a relationship.

People are also found sharing their feeling, address, occupation, along with photographs of friends, college, spouse and relatives, on social media channels after knowing, it is not secure.
We do share our phone no by downloading the apps on our mobile phone and make the company aware about our location, like a GPS tracking device.

Our valuable information may not have any value for us, but social media companies knows how to make money from it.

In other way, you are providing yourself free of cost to the social media companies, for making millions from you. They provide benefits to those groups, companies, people, community, countries and political parties, who pays them a good amount of money, against your data.

If you go to any recruitment website, you will notice that posting of your resume is totally free. But, they charge service fee from those companies and consultancy firms, who buys you uploaded resume for employment or for any other uses.

Just think and realize about the digital life, we are living in. How many of us read terms and conditions, while accepting any social media membership? How many of us knows, about the complete setting structures provided and uses it? And how many of us avoid being member of the social media channel, after being disagreed on their terms & condition?

Setting up the example of the value of confidential information and its sharing, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has denied to reveal the name of the hotel, where he stayed last night and the names of the persons to whom he has messaged this week. These two simple questions asked by  Senator Dick Durbin was enough to drive a point about privacy and its seriousness, for all of us.

It's true, that India doesn't have strict rules to regulate social media companies, as like USA. But, sharing our private information on any  platforms is completely our choice. It depends on us, how much conscious are we in sharing our confidential information on such platform, which are not safe and has a risk of data misuses.
